The calendar

2027 dates, in order

When an International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) due date falls on a weekend, the return is due the next business day, and the dates below already reflect that. UCR is Unified Carrier Registration; an MIS report is the drug and alcohol Management Information System summary.

Each January, check the DOT random testing rates for the year. FMCSA's 2026 minimum is 50% for drugs and 10% for alcohol (49 CFR 382.305), and our consortium confirms the 2027 rates when DOT publishes them.

Deadlines that depend on you

These fall on a different date for every carrier or driver. We track them for each of our customers.

MCS-150 update

Every 24 months, by the end of the month set by the last digit of your USDOT number. The next-to-last digit sets odd or even years (49 CFR 390.19). MCS-150 filing, $35.

IRP renewal

Your fleet's expiration month, shown on your International Registration Plan (IRP) cab card. Nebraska DMV sends the renewal notice on the 15th of the month before, and online renewal opens 45 days ahead. IRP registration, from $150.

Each driver, every 12 months

An updated motor vehicle record (MVR) with a documented review (49 CFR 391.25) and a limited Clearinghouse query (49 CFR 382.701).

Medical certification

The expiration date the medical examiner set. For CDL drivers, the new certification now reaches the state driving record electronically, which can take several days, so book a DOT physical at our Lincoln or Beatrice clinic at least a week before it runs out.

What happens if a date is missed

The consequences, stated plainly

  • MCS-150: FMCSA can deactivate your USDOT number, and civil penalties can apply.
  • IFTA: a late return draws a penalty even when it shows no tax due, plus interest on any tax owed.
  • Medical certification: the driver isn't qualified to drive until a new certification is on record.
  • Annual MVR review or Clearinghouse query: a gap an auditor will find, and a driver you can't show is qualified.

2027 deadline questions

When are 2027 IFTA returns due?

February 1, April 30, August 2, and November 1, 2027. IFTA returns are normally due the last day of the month after each quarter, but January 31, July 31, and October 31 fall on weekends in 2027, so those returns move to the next business day. Our IFTA filing is $100 a return for 1 to 5 trucks.

When is the 2028 UCR due?

By December 31, 2027. Registration for the next year usually opens October 1, and filing early means your UCR is in place before January 1. Our UCR registration service fee is $35, and the UCR fee itself is billed at cost.

When is Form 2290 due in 2027?

August 31, 2027, for vehicles with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 lb or more that are in use in July, covering the July 2027 to June 2028 tax period. A vehicle first used later in the period is due by the end of the month after the month it was first used. Our Form 2290 filing is $70; the tax itself is not included.

How do I know when my MCS-150 is due?

Look at your USDOT number. The last digit sets the month: 1 is January, 2 is February, and so on, with 0 for October. The next-to-last digit sets the year: odd digits file in odd-numbered years and even digits in even-numbered years (49 CFR 390.19). Our MCS-150 update is $35.

When does my Nebraska IRP registration renew?

In your fleet's expiration month, which is shown on your cab card. Nebraska DMV sends the renewal notice on the 15th of the month before, and online renewal opens 45 days before expiration. Our IRP renewal is $150 for 1 to 3 trucks, plus $20 for each truck above 3, with apportioned fees billed at cost.
